I think the point here, and in countless other apparent inconsistencies in scripture, is that a right relationship with God cannot be distilled into a theological formula…baptism or no baptism. The thief on the cross, the unborn, the mentally ill, or any number of other examples would send you rationalizing your way down a path that is an affront to God, so let’s not do that.
