Demon possession is a fascinating yet often misunderstood topic. The Bible gives clear testimony about the reality of demons, their presence in biblical times, and their interactions with both Jesus and His apostles. However, the question remains: Does demon possession still occur today? By examining Scripture, we can determine the truth about this subject and dispel many misconceptions.
The Reality of Demons in Scripture
Demons are real spiritual beings. The Bible provides undeniable eyewitness testimony from Jesus, His apostles, and the multitudes who witnessed demonic activity. Consider these passages:
Matthew 12:22-29 – Jesus casts out a demon from a blind and mute man, demonstrating His authority over Satan.
Mark 1:23-28 – Jesus rebukes an unclean spirit, and the people marvel at His power.
Mark 5:1-15 – Jesus encounters a man possessed by "Legion," a multitude of demons, and casts them into a herd of swine.
Acts 19:13-17 – Jewish exorcists attempt to cast out demons in Jesus’ name but fail, demonstrating that true power over demons belonged to Christ and His followers.
Demons not only existed but were active in the world during Jesus’ ministry and the time of the apostles. Their presence served a significant purpose: to demonstrate God's power over them. Jesus Himself said, “But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you” (Matthew 12:28, NKJV). This shows that the ability to cast out demons was proof of God’s rule and authority over Satan’s kingdom.
The Origin of Demons
The Bible does not give a definitive explanation of where demons came from, but there is strong evidence to suggest that they are fallen angels—angels that sinned and were cast down. Consider these key points:
Satan is the ruler of the demon kingdom (Matthew 12:24-25).
Both demons and angels are spirit-beings (Mark 5:12-13; Hebrews 1:13-14).
Some angels sinned and were cast down (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6).
Sin is from the Devil, and demons are connected to his work (1 John 3:8).
Satan has “his angels” (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 12:7-10).
While the Bible does not explicitly say that demons are fallen angels, this explanation is the most reasonable conclusion based on these passages.
Did Demon Possession End?
Many today believe that demon possession still occurs, but the Bible provides strong evidence that demon possession was a temporary phenomenon that no longer happens. Here are three key reasons:
The Miraculous Ability to Cast Out Demons Has Ceased
The New Testament teaches that miraculous gifts, including the ability to cast out demons, were given for a specific purpose and were temporary. Paul wrote:
“Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.” (1 Corinthians 13:8, NKJV)
Mark 16:17-20 confirms that casting out demons was a miraculous sign. If this power was temporary and has ceased, then so has the ability for demons to possess people. If demon possession were still occurring, we would have no way to rid ourselves of them today, which contradicts the Bible’s teaching that we can resist Satan (James 4:7).
Jesus Has Bound the “Strong Man”
Jesus described His authority over Satan in Matthew 12:29, saying:
“How can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.”
Jesus demonstrated His power over demons and ultimately over Satan himself. Additional passages confirm this truth:
1 John 3:8 – Jesus came to destroy the works of the Devil.
Luke 10:17-18 – Jesus told His disciples He saw Satan “fall like lightning from heaven.”
Revelation 12:7-10 – A victory over Satan occurred in connection with Christ’s work.
Since Christ has already demonstrated victory over Satan, demon possession no longer serves the purpose it once did—to show Jesus’ power over the spiritual realm.
Zechariah’s Prophecy of the End of Demon Possession
One of the clearest proofs that demon possession has ceased is found in Zechariah 13:1-2. This passage describes events that would take place in the Messianic age—the New Testament period:
“In that day a fountain shall be opened for the house of David and for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, for sin and for uncleanness.” (Zechariah 13:1, NKJV)
This is a clear prophecy of Jesus' sacrifice, the cleansing of sin through His blood. But look at what comes next:
“It shall be in that day... I will also cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to depart from the land.” (Zechariah 13:2, NKJV)
This verse shows that in the same time period when the fountain of cleansing (Jesus’ sacrifice) would be opened, the unclean spirit (demons) would depart from the land. Since Jesus has already died for our sins, and the church has been established, demon possession has come to an end, just as Zechariah foretold.
Satan’s Current Influence
Even though demons no longer possess people, Satan is still active today. Instead of using demon possession, he now works through deception and temptation. The Bible warns:
1 Peter 5:8-9 – “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith...”
James 1:13-15 – Temptation leads to sin when we are drawn away by our own desires.
2 Corinthians 11:14 – Satan disguises himself as an angel of light to deceive.
Satan’s most dangerous work is leading people into sin and away from God. While demon possession was terrifying, sin is even more destructive because it can lead to eternal separation from God (Matthew 25:41-46).
Victory in Christ
Though Satan is still active, we are not helpless. The Bible promises:
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, NKJV)
“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37, NKJV)
We do not need to fear demons or Satan’s power. Jesus has already won the victory. If we turn to Him in obedient faith, we can have the assurance of eternal life (1 Peter 1:3-5).
Final Thoughts
Demon possession was a real phenomenon in biblical times, serving as evidence of Jesus’ authority over Satan. However, the Bible teaches that demon possession has ended. Miraculous gifts, including casting out demons, have ceased, Jesus has bound Satan, and Zechariah 13:1-2 foretold the end of demonic activity.
Satan still works today, but through temptation and deception, not demon possession. However, we are not helpless—through Christ, we can resist Satan and overcome him. Instead of fearing demons, we should focus on resisting sin and following Christ, who has already given us the victory.
