Lifting Others
Finding Joy in Serving Others
“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” — Philippians 2:3 (NKJV)
The Christian journey isn’t a solo race to the top, nor is it about securing personal achievements at the expense of others. Rather, it is a call to love, humility, and service, where we seek not to exalt ourselves but to elevate those around us. The Bible teaches us that greatness in God's eyes is defined by serving others and putting their needs above our own.
True Greatness Through Humility
In Philippians 2:3, Paul reminds us that “selfish ambition” and “conceit” have no place in a believer’s life. The way of Christ is the way of humility. Jesus Himself set the ultimate example: “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who… made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant” (Philippians 2:5-7 NKJV). Jesus, though equal with God, chose humility and servitude over glory, demonstrating that greatness in God's kingdom is achieved through selflessness.
Encouraging and Lifting Others Up
Rather than seeking to outdo one another, Christians are called to encourage and support each other. Paul teaches in Romans 12:10, “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.” This means valuing others and finding ways to build them up, especially in their walk with Christ. A life rooted in Christ is one that helps others along the journey of faith, offering words of encouragement, kindness, and support.
Serving One Another in Love
Jesus calls us to serve others as an expression of love: “For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13 NKJV). We are freed from selfish pursuits so that we may joyfully serve others, embodying Christ’s love and compassion. Serving others is one of the highest callings in the Christian life, and it brings us closer to the heart of God.
Walking in Unity and Building Community
The Christian journey is meant to be walked in unity with others, not in isolation. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to “consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together… but exhorting one another.” Christianity is a family, a community of believers who grow stronger together. By encouraging and supporting one another, we can journey through life with the shared purpose of glorifying God and helping each other stay steadfast in faith.
The Blessing of Putting Others First
When we put others first, God honors that humility. “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” (James 4:10 NKJV). The Christian life isn’t about climbing a ladder of success but about bringing others along, helping them find their footing, and lifting them up. The joy and fulfillment of walking in humility and love far outweigh any temporary gain that selfish ambition could offer.
True Joy Comes in Reflecting the Heart of Christ
The road to the top in God’s kingdom is paved with love, humility, and service. By esteeming others and lifting them up along the way, we reflect the heart of Christ and find true joy in knowing we’re not running this race alone. May we embrace the example of Jesus, who lived not for His own glory but for the good of others, bringing many sons and daughters to glory.
