“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” – John 17:17 (NKJV)
In conversations with friends, co-workers, and even family, the topic of religion often arises. Unfortunately, what follows is rarely a joyful conversation about faith—it’s often a painful venting session about past experiences. Many have been soured by what they encountered in the religious world: the Catholic Church with its man-made traditions, denominational churches that each teach conflicting doctrines, or modern “Bible” churches that preach feel-good, shallow gospels.
The religious landscape is cluttered with confusion, contradictions, and compromises. This spiritual mess leaves many disillusioned, skeptical, or even hostile toward anything that smells of "organized religion." But what do we do in these situations—whether it’s someone else we’re trying to help, or ourselves wrestling through it?
The Simple Answer: Go to the Source
We don’t need to turn to creeds, councils, catechisms, or charismatic personalities. We don’t need a religious label or allegiance to a denomination. We need only one thing: God’s word.
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NKJV)
God has already provided everything we need to know Him and to live in a way that pleases Him. The Bible is sufficient. It is not lacking. It is not outdated. It is not bound to one culture or time.
We must encourage people to go back to the Scriptures—and to do so honestly. Not looking to affirm what they already believe. Not searching for validation. But opening their heart to learn what God actually says, even if it means unlearning years of tradition.
“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” – Acts 17:11 (NKJV)
God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). He desires unity in truth (John 17:20–21). When someone truly seeks Him through His word, He will not leave them in the dark.
Unmasking the Traditions of Men
When Scripture is allowed to speak clearly—without filters of tradition or denominational lenses—falsehood becomes obvious. Jesus warned about religious people who honored God with their lips, but whose hearts were far from Him:
“And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” – Matthew 15:9 (NKJV)
Traditions are not wrong in and of themselves—but when they replace or contradict God's word, they become dangerous. They create barriers to truth, leading people into lifeless religion instead of a living relationship with Christ.
Seeing the Simplicity of the Gospel
The gospel is not complicated. It’s not layered with rituals or burdened with man-made requirements. It is the beautiful, life-giving message that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again—and that all who respond to Him in obedient faith can be saved (1 Corinthians 15:1–4; Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38).
It calls us to believe, repent, confess Christ, be baptized, and live faithfully (Romans 10:9–10; Acts 2:38; Revelation 2:10). There’s no need for church councils or papal decrees—just a willingness to follow Jesus according to His word.
Final Thought: A Test That Always Works
So whether you’re trying to help a friend burned by religion, or you’re personally seeking clarity in the chaos, do this one thing:
Test everything by Scripture.
“Test all things; hold fast what is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21 (NKJV)
If it’s from God, it will stand. If it’s from man, it will fall. The truth has nothing to fear from scrutiny.
Let God’s word clear the debris. Let it shine in the darkness. Let it show you—and others—the way.
