Prayer Is Not Just for the Big Things
When we think of prayer, we often associate it with life’s major trials—illness, grief, financial strain, or decisions that weigh heavily on our hearts. While it’s certainly right to go to God in these moments, we can easily fall into the trap of thinking that prayer is reserved only for the big stuff. But Scripture shows us that God invites us to bring everything to Him—even the smallest concerns.
In his excellent article, “Is Any Request Too Small?” from The Scattershot Report, Weylan Deaver beautifully captures this truth. He reminds us that prayer is not merely about asking God to fix things or grant blessings. It is also about giving Him praise, showing gratitude, and drawing close to Him—even in the ordinary moments of our day. That mindset can change everything.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7, NKJV
Notice that Paul says “in everything”. Not just during crises. Not just in moments of desperation. Everything includes both the monumental and the mundane.
God Cares About the Details
One of the most comforting truths about our Father in heaven is that He deeply cares about us—even down to the smallest details of our lives.
“Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? And not one of them is forgotten before God. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”
Luke 12:6–7, NKJV
If God pays attention to the sparrows and the hairs on your head, why wouldn’t He care about the things that stress you out during the day—the traffic, the difficult conversation, the lost keys, or the to-do list that feels too long?
No request is too small. No moment too insignificant. God wants us to come to Him because He is a loving Father who is present, ready to listen, and eager to comfort.
Prayer Refocuses Our Hearts
Prayer isn’t just a way to receive help—it’s a way to find perspective. When we talk to God about the little things, we open the door for His peace to settle our hearts. It reminds us to be thankful for what we already have and to trust Him for what we don’t.
Sometimes, the simple act of stopping and praying can calm a racing mind. It can transform frustration into gratitude, and chaos into peace.
“Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7, NKJV
Taking even a few moments to talk with God during a stressful situation can settle the soul in ways that no human advice or solution ever could.
Praise Belongs in Every Prayer
Weylan Deaver also makes an important point: prayer isn’t only for asking—it’s also for praising. We often forget how much peace comes from simply thanking God for the blessings we already enjoy. Family, food, breath in our lungs, a friend’s encouragement, a beautiful sunrise—these are all reasons to praise.
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Psalm 34:1, NKJV
Praise pulls our focus off our problems and onto our Provider. It reminds us that even when life feels overwhelming, God is still good, still faithful, and still worthy of our worship.
A Lifestyle of Constant Communion
Jesus modeled this beautifully. Scripture tells us that He often withdrew to pray—not just in moments of need, but as a continual connection to His Father.
“So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.”
Luke 5:16, NKJV
Prayer was Jesus’ way of staying centered, strengthened, and spiritually nourished. And if Jesus—the Son of God—needed that time with the Father, how much more do we?
Let’s not treat prayer like a fire alarm. Let’s treat it like the oxygen it was meant to be.
Let the Little Things Lead You to God
The truth is, our lives are filled with little things. And those little things can either accumulate into stress, anxiety, and spiritual fatigue—or they can become opportunities to draw near to God.
“The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”
James 5:16b, NKJV
Don’t wait for the big problems to pray. Practice coming to God in the little things—because that’s where much of life happens. And when we do, we may just find that peace, calm, and gratitude become our daily companions.
No Request is Too Small
Thanks again to Weylan Deaver and The Scattershot Report for the heartfelt reminder: no request is too small. Whether you’re rejoicing, struggling, uncertain, or simply trying to get through the day—bring it to God. Talk to Him. Praise Him. Thank Him.
Prayer isn’t just a way to get what we want. It’s a way to become who we were created to be: people of peace, gratitude, and unshakable trust in a loving Father.
