Have you ever stopped to marvel at the incredible truth that, as Christians, we are heirs of God? It’s easy to read over those words in Scripture, but have you truly let the depth of their meaning sink into your heart?
Paul declares in Romans 8:16-17 (NKJV), “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ.”
Take a moment to reflect on that. Through Christ, we are given a share in the eternal glory of God’s kingdom—a gift so magnificent that it redefines what it means to live as royalty.
An Inheritance of Grace
This inheritance is not earned by merit or good works; it is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Peter describes it as, “an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4, NKJV). Unlike earthly possessions that decay, are stolen, or lose value, our heavenly inheritance is eternal and secure. It is a treasure beyond comprehension, preserved by God Himself.
Living as Heirs of God
Being an heir of God transforms how we view ourselves and the world around us. It means that our identity is rooted not in earthly titles, achievements, or possessions but in our relationship with the Creator of the universe. As children of God, we are loved, valued, and destined for glory. This reality should inspire us to live with purpose, hope, and joy, regardless of our circumstances.
Paul reminds us, “The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18, NKJV). Trials and hardships are temporary, but the glory that awaits us is eternal. Living with this eternal perspective empowers us to endure difficulties, walk in faith, and reflect the character of Christ in our daily lives.
A Call to Live Worthy
As heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, we are called to live in a manner worthy of our royal status. This means:
Walking in righteousness – Knowing that we represent God’s kingdom, we are called to pursue holiness, as Peter exhorts, “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct” (1 Peter 1:15, NKJV).
Living with humility – Just as Jesus humbled Himself to serve others, we too must serve and love others selflessly. Our inheritance is a gift of grace, not something we have earned, so we should never look down on others but instead extend the same grace we’ve received.
Fixing our eyes on eternity – Our focus should not be on accumulating worldly treasures but on storing up treasures in heaven, as Jesus taught in Matthew 6:19-21 (NKJV), where He said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Embracing Our Royal Identity
Do you fully grasp the richness of your inheritance in Christ? If you are an heir to glory, how should that change the way you live today? This understanding should fill you with awe, gratitude, and a deep desire to honor God with your life.
Let us live as heirs of God—boldly, joyfully, and purposefully—knowing that our future is secure and our inheritance is beyond compare. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3, NKJV).
So, as you go about your day, remember this: You are royalty redefined. Live like the heir of Christ you are, and let the world see the greatness of the King through you.
Excellent article Kenny. We need to be thinking more about being part of Royalty in His Kingdom. And then following up by acting as Royalty in His Kingdom.
