We are incredibly blessed to live in a nation where freedom is a foundational principle. While no country is perfect, the ability to speak freely, raise our families, pursue dreams, and especially worship God without fear of persecution is something we should never take for granted. Many around the world are not afforded these privileges. They risk imprisonment or even death for gathering in the name of Jesus, reading the Bible, or sharing their faith. Yet here, we can praise God openly, attend church without fear, and share the gospel freely.
But as wonderful and valuable as our civil freedoms are, there is a greater and more eternal freedom offered to all people—not by governments, but by Jesus Christ.
Freedom in Christ: The Greatest Liberty
Jesus said in John 8:36 (NKJV):
“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”
This isn’t political or societal freedom—it’s the ultimate liberation from sin and death. Sin enslaves us with guilt, shame, addiction, and brokenness. No human law or constitution can free us from that kind of bondage. Only Christ can.
Paul echoes this in Romans 6:22 (NKJV):
“But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.”
When we obey the gospel—believing, repenting, confessing Christ, being baptized for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38), and walking faithfully—we are no longer bound by sin. Instead, we’re free to walk in righteousness, empowered by grace, and destined for eternal life.
Freedom That Cannot Be Taken
Civil freedoms may be taken by force, changed by laws, or stripped away in times of unrest. But the freedom Christ offers is eternal. No government, no enemy, no hardship can take it from us.
As Paul boldly declared in Romans 8:38–39 (NKJV):
“For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come… shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Use Your Freedom Wisely
Galatians 5:13 (NKJV) reminds us:
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”
We should use both our national and spiritual freedoms to glorify God, serve others, and shine as lights in a dark world.
Our freedom in this country gives us opportunity. Our freedom in Christ gives us purpose.
What Are You Doing with Your Freedom?
Let’s be thankful for the freedoms we enjoy in this country—especially the freedom to worship God. But even more so, let’s cherish and live out the freedom found only in Christ. Because while earthly freedoms may fade, the liberty we have in Jesus leads to holiness and everlasting life.
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free…”
— Galatians 5:1 (NKJV)
Immediately thankful for 2 things.
#1 - My freedom being in Christ.
#2 - The freedom of your thoughts, heart, spirit & soul regularly expressed in your writings ✍️, that expound the truth of the True Freedom giver.
