As Christians, one of the most exciting and humbling truths we hold is that God is always at work in our lives. Even when we can’t see it, even when there are no clear signs or miraculous interventions, His providence is never absent. Though we may never fully know for certain how or when God has worked, the Scriptures remind us again and again that He is indeed working all things together for His purpose and our good.
One small but powerful word captures this mystery beautifully: "perhaps."
Esther: A Providential Moment
In the book of Esther, God's name is never explicitly mentioned, yet His hand is evident in every detail. One of the most famous moments comes when Mordecai urges Esther to speak up for her people, though it might cost her life. He says:
“Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
— Esther 4:14, NKJV
Mordecai’s statement carries the weight of providence wrapped in humility—“perhaps” she was placed in her position by God for this very moment. He doesn’t claim certainty, but he acknowledges what every believer should: God might be using this situation for His divine purpose.
We Walk by Faith, Not by Sight
Today, we often find ourselves in similar positions. We might wonder:
Was it God who opened that door?
Did He protect me from that disaster?
Is He using me in this role for a greater purpose?
We may never know with certainty on this side of eternity, but the Scriptures assure us of this truth:
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
— Romans 8:28, NKJV
We aren’t always granted visible proof, but we are called to trust that God is weaving a story through our lives, even in the ordinary and even through trials. Just as He worked through Esther—quietly and powerfully—He works in us today.
The Joy of Living with “Perhaps”
Living with the awareness of God’s providence turns our daily lives into a spiritual adventure. That conversation you had? That job you took? That struggle you’re enduring? Perhaps God is using it all to shape something greater. What a thrilling way to live—eyes open, hearts trusting.
Even the apostle Paul, guided by the Spirit, sometimes spoke in terms of possibility:
“For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever…”
— Philemon 1:15, NKJV
Paul didn't claim a definitive revelation here, but he understood that God may have had a providential plan in the situation.
Trusting the Unseen Hand
While we should be cautious not to speak for God where He has not spoken, we should never doubt that He is at work. This is the joy of walking by faith:
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:7, NKJV
We may not always see His fingerprints clearly, but we can trust that they are there. How amazing to consider that the Almighty is moving in our lives, opening and closing doors, placing us where we need to be—for such a time as this.
Finding Hope in Perhaps
Let us live with confidence, gratitude, and expectancy—knowing that perhaps God is working even now in ways we can't yet see. That word “perhaps” reminds us of our humility, but also of our hope. For in all things, God's providence is real—and it is marvelous.
“This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes.”
— Psalm 118:23, NKJV
