Worry is something we all experience at times. Life brings uncertainties, struggles, and difficulties that can weigh heavily on our hearts and minds. However, while worry is inevitable, it should not consume us. As Christians, we have a powerful remedy—prayer.
The children’s song asks a simple yet profound question:
"Why worry, when you can pray?
Trust Jesus, He’ll be your stay.
Don’t be a doubting Thomas,
Rest fully on His promise.
Why worry, worry, worry, worry,
When you can pray?"
This song reminds us of a truth found throughout Scripture—God calls us to bring our worries to Him in prayer and trust Him to provide for our needs.
Worry Weighs Us Down
Worry is a natural human response, but it is not meant to rule our lives. Jesus addressed this in Matthew 6:25-27:
“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” (Matthew 6:25-27, NKJV).
Jesus reminds us that worry does not add anything to our lives—it only burdens us. Instead of being consumed by anxious thoughts, we are called to trust in God’s care and provision.
The Remedy: Prayer
Rather than letting worry control us, we are invited to lay our burdens before the Lord in prayer. Philippians 4:6-7 gives us a clear instruction:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7, NKJV).
Prayer is the antidote to worry. When we take our concerns to God, we exchange anxiety for His peace. This peace is beyond human understanding, guarding our hearts and minds against the weight of worry.
Casting Our Cares on Him
God does not intend for us to carry our burdens alone. He lovingly invites us to cast them upon Him:
“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7, NKJV).
This verse reassures us that God cares deeply about every detail of our lives. He wants us to bring our worries to Him and trust that He will sustain us.
Trusting God Through Prayer
When we pray instead of worry, we demonstrate our trust in God’s faithfulness. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us of the importance of trusting Him completely:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV).
Rather than trying to figure everything out on our own, we are called to trust in God’s wisdom and guidance. He knows our needs and will direct our paths according to His perfect will.
Why Worry, When You Can Pray?
Worry is something we all experience, but it should not control us. Instead, we have the privilege of turning to God in prayer, trusting that He will provide, sustain, and give us peace. The simple words of the children’s song ring true:
"Why worry, when you can pray?"
The next time you feel overwhelmed, remember this promise from Jesus:
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, NKJV).
Lay your burdens at His feet, trust in His promises, and let His peace rule in your heart.
